History

At the Division 17 Houston 2001 Conference, the Section for LGB Awareness (SLGBA), the Section for Ethnic and Racial Diversity (SERD), and the Section for the Advancement of Women (SAW) met together to discuss coalition building.  These are some of the ideas that arose in this discussion:

• As sections that address social justice issues, we clearly have some common goals, and our voices will be more powerful if we join together.
• Some individuals have memberships in multiple sections, which makes it difficult to participate fully since section events are sometimes scheduled at the same time.
• Although members of all three sections are committed to social justice issues, we may not be aware of the issues addressed by the sections to which we don’t belong, and we may all lack some awareness of issues that are not covered by any section (e.g., social class, disabilities).
• We cannot rely on the structure of Division 17 to provide us opportunities to connect with each other.
• Rather than fighting over pieces of the pie, we need MORE PIE!

Vision/Mission of the More Pie Initiative

The More Pie Initiative is means of creating connections among members of SAW, SERD, and SLGBA in order to accomplish the following:

• Create a more powerful voice within Division 17
• Connect with other people within Division 17 who are interested in social justice
• Raise our own awareness about social justice issues
• Address intersections among oppressions and identities
• Create spaces to talk about difficult aspects of intersecting identities (e.g., feminism and multiculturalism, ethnic minority LGBT issues, privilege)
• Help students connect with SAW, SLGBA, and SERD

MPI is a process rather than an entity. It provides opportunities for discussion and collaboration among existing entities, but it does not take on free-standing projects

1. Go to the APA listserv site at http://listserve.apa.org/cgi-bin/WA.EXE
2. Click on "Subscriber's Corner"
3. Type in " DIV17MOREPIE" in the "Narrow Selection" area on the sidebar, and click "Submit"
4. Check off "DIV17MOREPIE" under "List Names"
5. Select "Subscribe"
6. Click on "Submit changes"
