Information for prospective students...
Greetings and thank you for
your interest in my work and in our program at UCSB. I plan to accept at least one student this
coming year (2012/2013*), and I encourage you to apply.
My research focuses primarily personality and
neuropsychological assessment of children and adults. My primary research
interests these days are in sport psychology, therapeutic applications of
personality assessment, and diversity issues in assessment. Students working with me should have
interests that are primarily in the areas of sport psychology, personality
assessment, and therapeutic assessment (in that order). If you have interest in sport psychology or
psychological assessment, please be sure to submit your application to our
program.
Beginning in Fall,
2011, I will have a joint appointment with the Department of Athletics to start
a performance enhancement clinic for competitive athletes. I expect that much of my clinical and
research time will be devoted to those efforts.
My clinical orientation is strongly
psychodynamic, but my clinical technique borrows extensively from other
orientations including cognitive-behavioral and systemic. We are a program that
seeks to train researchers and academics, but good clinical training is the
cornerstone of these activities. I seek students who are reflective,
compassionate, and insightful about the reasons they want to be clinical
psychologists; clinical experience (in all its forms) is a necessity.
Information on applying to the program can be found at: http://www.education.ucsb.edu/ccsp/
We offer informational meetings for prospective
applicants to the CCSP program. See http://www.education.ucsb.edu/ccsp/ccspmtg.html
for details. Contact the program staff at ccspapp@education.ucsb.edu for
additional information or questions about the application process. If you are
invited for an interview, you will have ample opportunity to talk with faculty
and students in the program.
I’m also always on the lookout for bright
people with adequate balance or upper body strength to contribute to my
traditional pyramid of grad students.

Best wishes for a successful application process.
Steve Smith, Ph.D.
*So I ask you not to email me to ask if I'm taking graduate students.
