Network - 2100 Wing of GGSE Building

A network switch supporting a few users and a number of printers blew its power supply. A new one has been RMA'd and should be received on Monday. This outage will have little impact on users as only a handful of network devices are plugged into this switch. We expect things to be operational Monday or Tuesday.

INFO
This Saturday the building contractors and inspectors will be shutting down the building power in order to inspect the electrical panels.
We are working with them to insure that information technology services will remain available throughout the outage/inspection. However,
without Emergency power nor temporary power being provided we can not guarantee that there will be no service interruption.
We will be on site and coordinating with the inspectors. Please stay tuned to the ITG News page for updates.

** WHAT YOU SHOULD DO **
Please, power off ALL devices that use electricity. For example, shutdown your computers, turn you monitors and printers off.
Unplug any computer peripherals (i.e portable hard drives).

Transition to the new Building - Tech Note #2

Dear Users,

The ITG would like to welcome you to the new building. There are a few technology items that we would like to highlight to make the transition easier including access control, your computer and wireless .

Building Access Control and Security

The easiest and safest way to the new building is through the main front entrance off of Ocean Road. As you come through the exterior doors you will see small black card readers on the outside. These card readers provide access control. When the doors are locked you place your access card close to the reader, you'll hear a click, then pull the door open. Most exterior doors have readers and enable us to provide a more secure environment. If you're interested, the Help Desk has prepared an on-line map of the building with names and room numbers.

Wired Access for Primary Office Computer

Over the next few days the ITG will still be setting up and configuring users primary computer and network printer for our new network. Most staff have their computers up and running. Please contact the local staff person to get a message to ITG regarding computer setup. We request that you NOT connect your computer into the data network as we need to change settings on your computer and document network ports.

Wireless Access

Our new wireless network inside the building is currently deployed everywhere but the first floor. We are testing out the new infrastructure and the myriad devices that will use it. We are investigating the Access Point (AP) coverage and will be tweaking the setup over the next few weeks. Our primary goal this coming week is to get user computers online, so while we will not be focusing on wireless, the adventurous can read up and try to configure their device to connect to the secure "GGSE Public" WPA2 Enterprise wireless network using EAP-TTLS with PAP and 802.1X authentication.
( login with you Directory userid and password)

** Stay tuned to transition issues by going to the ITG Home page and checking the ITG News(RSS) and System Status. **

Thank you
Bill

Dear Users,

Over the next few days the ITG will be transitioning to the new building. ITG will be moving in with limited communication options and this could impede our ability to respond quickly. Please continue to email Help@education.ucsb.edu to request help as our phone lines will be unavailable in the interim.

Email, web and directory services are not currently being transitioned to the new building. We can not yet determine when we will transition these server resources to the new building. We will communicate to users in advance when we expect this to happen.

However, please stay tuned to transition issues by going to the ITG Home page and checking the ITG News(RSS) and System Status. ** We will communicate to users via the ITG Home page even if other resources are unavailable. **

news

We appreciate the impact that this transition has on all of our users and we hope to make the best of this challenging situation.

Thank you
Bill
