The Center for Equity in
Mathematics and Science Education (CEMSE) is committed to promoting
equal representation and increased achievement of diverse student populations
in mathematics and science education. CEMSE supports the continued education
of teachers, the creation of collaborative research endeavors with them,
and the implementation of innovative classroom practices to address
critical issues of equity facing students, teachers, schools, and communities.
The Center’s goal is to fundamentally improve public education
in mathematics and science for all children.
Abstract
GGSE mathematics and science education researchers and teacher educators
have joined with practicing mathematics and science teachers to work
collaboratively in a center for equity in mathematics and science education.
Our purpose is to promote scientific and mathematical literacy for all
students so as to eliminate differences in access to and achievement
in these disciplines along race, ethnic, class, and gender lines. The
Center engages in three main activities:
• The systematic investigation of secondary (6-12) mathematics
and science teachers’ efforts to implement equitable curricular
and instructional strategies in their own classrooms.
• The development and implementation of an innovative model of
continuing teacher education for teachers to understand, address, and
research issues of racism, sexism, and classism in the processes of
teaching and learning.
• The bringing together of state, national, and international
scholars to examine and take action regarding the enduring problem of
equity in mathematics and science education.
These activities build on current research strengths of the GGSE faculty
and teacher participants. The Center also provides resources to public
secondary schools; assists in the recruitment of mathematics and science
education graduate students of the highest caliber; and establishes
an extensive network of teachers, professional developers, and educational
researchers working toward an improved science and mathematics education
for all students. Ultimately, this Center will make the GGSE central
to national discussions on educational equity and ways to implement
and sustain educational change.
