Teacher Education Program

Home / Graduate Studies / TEP / Sloan

Welcome from the Director

Tine SloanWelcome! At UC Santa Barbara we offer a small, cohesive program with committed faculty who support teacher candidates through all aspects of teacher preparation.

We are a strong research university, providing unique intellectual and organizational supports for faculty and candidates alike. We offer a professional program with conscious, purposeful links to our K-12 partner schools, providing candidates with a rich and continuous 9-month teaching experience. As a result, the program has earned a reputation for preparing high quality, well-rounded and confident teachers who excel as leaders.

We are passionate about preparing teachers who can learn from their teaching, and resolute in providing sound, research-based practices as a foundation for that learning. Every child brings unique strengths and challenges to the classroom. To meet their needs teachers must continually develop new knowledge about them and with them, and create a teaching-learning environment where all members can thrive.

Learning to teach is hard work because good teaching is difficult—difficult but rewarding beyond imagine. We immerse our candidates in classrooms by day and the university by night. We immerse ourselves in supporting their work, developing close relationships with each candidate and with all colleagues involved in preparing them to teach. The integrity of our program rests on our shared love of the profession and our shared belief that effective teachers are the key to our future. We invite you to participate in this important work.
