Available Financial Assistance
for Teacher Education Program Students
2012-2013

We work very hard to find financial support for our students. Your statement of purpose includes a question on financial need so that we can begin finding sources for you immediately upon application.

There are four kinds of financial assistance sources available to support students in the Teacher Education Program at UCSB:

(1) Federal Grant

(2) State Money

(3) University Money

(4) Privately funded Fellowships and Scholarships

FEDERAL

• The TEACH Grant

The TEACH Grant Program provides up to $4,000 a year in grant assistance graduate students who agree to serve for at least four years as full-time "highly qualified" teachers in high need fields in public or not-for-profit private elemetary or secondary schools that serve students from low-income families.

Admitted TEP students will receive the TEACH grant Fact Sheet at Orientation. For a preview, click here.

To access the Directory to schools serving low-income families, click here.

• The Robert Noyce Scholarship

The Noyce Scholarship provides up to $10,000 for students who are pursuing a single subject credential in mathematics or science in UCSB’s Teacher Education Program. Recipients must complete at least two years in a high-need local school district. High need is defined as: (a) a high percentage of individuals from families with incomes below the poverty line; (b) a high percentage of secondary school teachers not teaching in the content area in which the teachers were trained to teach; or (c) a high teacher turnover rate. The grace period for acquiring employment in a high need school is one year. If not employed in a high need school by year 2 and/or if two years of service in a high need school are not completed by year 8, the scholarship reverts to a loan with repayments pro-rated to reflect any partial teaching service. To access the application click here.

• The Hearst Foundation Fellowship

The UCSB Teacher Education Program awards five teacher candidates pursing a single subject credential in mathematics or science a Hearst Foundation Scholarship of $5,000. To access the Hearst Foundation Scholarship application, click here.

STATE

• Assumption Program for Loans in Education (APLE)

The Assumption Program of Loans for Education (APLE) is a state-sponsored, competitive loan forgiveness program that assists qualified teachers in repayment of their undergraduate and graduate Federal Stafford Loan(s), up to $11,000, over the course of four years.

  • APLE applications are sent to admitted students once funding becomes available.

For APLE FAQ's, click here

UNIVERSITY

• Fee Fellowship & Block Grants

The University Fee Fellowship and Block Grants are need-based monies. All Domestic and Permanent Resident students who wish to qualify must have filed/renewed the 2011-2012 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

  • Students will apply during the application process to the TEP program for Fall 2012 distribution.
  • The amount awarded to TEP students varies each year depending on the number of applicants.
