Available Financial Assistance
for Teacher Education Program Students
2008-2009

We work very hard to find financial support for our students. Your statement of purpose includes a question on financial need so that we can begin finding sources for you immediately upon application.

There are four kinds of financial assistance sources available to support students in the Teacher Education Program at UCSB:

(1) Federal Grant

(2) State Money

(3) University Money

(4) Privately funded Fellowships and Scholarships

FEDERAL

The TEACH Grant

The TEACH Grant Program provides up to $4,000 a year in grant assistance graduate students who agree to serve for at least four years as full-time "highly qualified" teachers in high need fields in public or not-for-profit private elemetary or secondary schools that serve students from low-income families.

Admitted TEP students will receive the TEACH grant Fact Sheet at Orientation. For preview, view here.

STATE

Assumption Program for Loans in Education (APLE)

The Assumption Program of Loans for Education (APLE) is a state-sponsored, competitive loan forgiveness program that assists qualified teachers in repayment of their undergraduate and graduate Federal Stafford Loan(s), up to $11,000, over the course of four years.

  • APLE applications are sent to admitted students once funding becomes available.

UNIVERSITY

Fee Fellowship

The University Fee Fellowship defined by UCSB's Graduate Division is a need-based fellowship. It may be applied towards in-state fees, health insurance (GSHIP), and/or non-resident tuition. It cannot be given as a stipend. All Domestic and Permanent Resident students who wish to qualify for a Fee Fellowship must have filed/renewed the 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Students Aid (FAFSA). In order to be eligible for a Fee Fellowship, domestic students must have unmet financial need as determined by the UCSB Financial Aid office.

  • Admitted TEP students will receive the application form for 2009-2010 Fee Fellowship at Orientation.
  • The amount of Fee Fellowship awarded to TEP students varies each year depending on the number of applicants. For AY 2008-2009, University Fee Fellowships awarded to students ranged from $1700 - $3500.

Block Grants

Block Grants are need-based money. The grant is distributed towards fees, insurance, and tuition. If there is any remaining amount, then it is issued as a stipend.

  • Students will apply during their applications process to the TEP program for Fall distribution and will need to reapply during Winter and Spring quarters.
  • The approximate amounts that have been awarded in previous years range from $500-$3000.
