Please review the Fee Chart and Summer Fees page for more information on tuition and fees. Graduate tuition fees for a California resident are approximately $13,000 for three quarters (Fall, Winter and Spring). The summer graduate fees for Teacher Education Program students are $338.67 per unit up to 12 units. During the first summer quarter of the Program, students typically pay a flat fee of approximately $4,300 (for over 12 units) and approximately $2,200 for the second summer quarter of the Program (only six units are required to complete the M.Ed). It's estimated that a California resident may pay $19,500 in tuition as a graduate student to complete the credential and M.Ed program. Please be aware that this is an estimate in tuition based on 2012-13 fees, other fees may apply.
We work very hard to find financial support for our students. Your "Personal Achievements/Contributions" essay questions include a question on financial aid need for applicants to complete so that we can begin awarding Block Grants and finding sources for you.
All applicants interested in financial aid must file both a 2013-14 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application by March 2, 2013 and a 2012-13 FAFSA application by June 30, 2013. The following questions on both FAFSA applications should be answered as follows:
♦ Question 29, Student’s Grade Level in College: 1st yr. Graduate/Professional Degree
♦ Question 30, Type of Degree/Certificate: Graduate/Professional Degree
Once TEP admitted applicants submit their Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) with a "Yes" answer, the TEP office will create a list identifying the new TEP students for the TEP advisor in the UCSB Financial Aid office. This advisor will create financial aid packages and award letters for new TEP students. Award letters will be posted to new students' financial aid accounts mid-to-late May at: https://www.finaid.ucsb.edu/aidstatus/index.asp
There are three kinds of financial assistance sources available to support students in the Teacher Education Program at UCSB:
(1) Federal Grants, Scholarships, & Loans
(2) University Block Grants
(3) Privately funded Fellowships and Scholarships
• The TEACH Grant
The TEACH Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 a year to students who are completing or plan to complete course work needed to begin a career in teaching. As a condition for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve in which you agree to (among other requirements) teach in a high-need field, at an elementary school, secondary school, or educational service agency that serves students from low-income families for at least four complete academic years within eight years after completing (or ceasing enrollment in) the course of study for which you received the grant.
A few of the requirements to receive a TEACH Grant include completing the FAFSA and meeting certain academic achievement requirements (generally, scoring above the 75th percentile on one or more portions of a college admissions test or maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25). Admitted TEP students will receive a TEACH grant presentation at Orientation. Please see the TEACH Grant Federal Student Aid web page for other requirements and more information.
• 5th Year Cal Grant Teaching Credential Benefits
TEP admitted applicants that received undergraduate Cal Grant A and B recipients who are accepted and enrolled in TEP after they receive their bachelor's degree may be eligible to renew their Cal Grant award for an additional year. The additional year of payment is provided to students who are seeking an initial teaching credential and cannot be used for other graduate level courses of study.
To be eligible for 5th Year Cal Grant benefits, TEP students must have:
♦ Received at least one payment in the Cal Grant A or B program as an undergraduate.
♦ Received a bachelor’s degree, or completed all required coursework for their bachelor's degree.
♦ Been accepted and enroll in TEP within 15 months of the end of the term for which the recipient last received a Cal Grant payment (for Academic Year 2013-14, the last eligible term is Spring semester/quarter 2012).
♦ Not received or submitted an application for a Preliminary or Clear Teaching Credential.
♦ Maintained financial need for a Cal Grant renewal.
Eligible students should apply for TCP benefits as soon as possible after completing their bachelor’s degree and after being formally or conditionally accepted into TEP. Eligible students are required to file both the 2012-2013 and 2013-14 FAFSA and the Request for Cal Grant TCP Benefits form (G-44). Please see the CA Student Aid Commission web page for the G-44 form.
• The Robert Noyce Scholarship
The Noyce Scholarship provides up to $10,000 for students who are pursuing a single subject credential in mathematics or science in TEP. Recipients must complete at least two years of teaching in a high-need school district. High need is defined as: (a) a high percentage of individuals from families with incomes below the poverty line; (b) a high percentage of secondary school teachers not teaching in the content area in which the teachers were trained to teach; or (c) a high teacher turnover rate. The grace period for acquiring employment in a high need school is one year. If not employed in a high need school by year 2 and/or if two years of service in a high need school are not completed by year 8, the scholarship reverts to a loan with repayments pro-rated to reflect any partial teaching service. Please see the Noyce Application for more information.
• The Hearst Foundation Fellowship
TEP awards Hearst Foundation Scholarships of $5,000 each to five students pursuing a single subject credential in mathematics or science. Please see the Hearst Foundation Scholarship Application for more information.
• Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan
UCSB participates in the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan program. This loan has low interest rates and does not require credit checks or collateral. Students are responsible for paying the interest during all periods. If students choose not to pay the interest while in school and during grace periods and deferment or forbearance periods, the interest will accrue (accumulate) and be capitalized (that is, your interest will be added to the principal amount of your loan). The UCSB Financial Aid office determines the amount TEP students can borrow by considering the cost of attendance minus other Financial Aid received. The annual maximum per academic year that a TEP student may borrow is $20,500.
This loan is eligible for the Teacher Loan Forgiveness program. Under this program, if you teach full-time for five complete and consecutive academic years in certain elementary and secondary schools and educational service agencies that serve low-income families, and meet other qualifications, you may be eligible for forgiveness of up to a combined total of $17,500 on your Direct Unsubsidized Loans (and any Direct Subsidized Loans, Subsidized and/or Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans students may have from their undergraduate years).
Please see the UCSB Financial Aid Graduate Loans web page, the Unsubsidized Loans Federal Student Aid web page, and the Teacher Loan Forgiveness Federal Student Aid web page for more information.
• Graduate PLUS Loan
The Graduate PLUS Loan program allows graduate students to borrow up to the full cost of education minus other Financial Aid received. A credit check will be performed during the application process and the borrower must not have an adverse credit history. Students may still receive a Direct PLUS Loan by obtaining an endorser who does not have an adverse credit history. The interest rate is fixed at 7.9%. Interest begins accruing as soon as the first disbursement is made. Payments on the Graduate PLUS Loan are deferred while Graduate students are in school as long as they are enrolled at least half-time. Please see the UCSB Financial Aid Graduate Loans web page and the PLUS Loans Federal Student Aid web page for more information.
• Block Grants
Block Grants are need-based department monies. For Fall 2013 distribution consideration, applicants must include a Financial Aid statement in their "Personal Achievements/Contributions" responses, as part of the University Application materials applicants upload to their TEP online application (please see page 4 of each cohort's Application Handbook for details). All applicants must have filed both the 2012-2013 and 2013-14 FAFSA to be eligible.
The amount awarded to TEP students varies each year depending on the number of applicants; for applicants to the 2012-13 cohort, the range was from $2,000 to $6,000.
Each scholarship selection committee is composed of a balance of TEP faculty/instructors, former recipients of a particular scholarship, and donors. Fellowship & scholarship announcements (including specific application requirements, items to address in the application essay, and application deadlines) are emailed to all TEP students starting fall quarter of each year by the TEP faculty scholarship coordinator.
