THE ROLE OF THE UNIVERSITY SUPERVISOR
University personnel are responsible for teacher candidate cohorts based at their elementary school sites. They serve as the primary liaison between the university and the public school.
The university supervisor is expected to:
• Assist teacher candidates in exploring and developing instructional strategies and pedagogical voice.
• Function as a consultant or resource person to teacher candidates.
• Observe teacher candidates working with children weekly. There is to be a formal observation every other week.
• Review and provide timely feedback on lesson plans submitted for formal observations.
• Conduct post-observation conversations following formal observations, providing both written and oral evidence-based feedback.
• Conduct weekly supervisory group seminars.
• Review and provide timely feedback on supervisory group assignments, including journal entries.
• Co-facilitate whole group professional issues seminars and attend al faculty meetings held at the university.
• Supervisor and In-House-Coordinator co-facilitate meetings with cooperating teachers and/or teacher candidates two to three times per semester.
• Assist cooperating teacher and teacher candidate pairs in understanding and utilizing co-teaching strategies, as appropriate.
• Consult regularly with public school partners (cooperating teachers and principals) about the performance of teacher candidates.
• Be knowledgeable about university coursework and be able to explain course expectations to teacher candidates, cooperating teachers, and public school administrators. Facilitate dialogue in order to extend and expand understanding of connections between theory and practice.
• Facilitate the year-long assessment process, including assessing the Performance Assessment for California Teachers (PACT) in April.
• Mediate between a teacher candidate and cooperating teacher, professor, administrator, or any combination thereof, when conflict resolution is necessary.
• Assist in making decisions about teacher candidate retention or dismissal.
• Write teacher candidate fall assessment and spring letter of recommendation.
• Assist with teacher candidate placement.
• Communicate regularly with program coordinator, including notification of emergent issues.
