Department of Education

Emphasis in Teaching and Learning

Specialization in Teacher Education & Professional Development

The Teacher Education and Professional Development (TEPD) Specialization is open to any interested graduate student within the Department of Education. Its major purpose is to provide graduate students with the knowledge and competencies necessary to fill teaching and research roles in institutions that educate educators. Such institutions include colleges of education; school districts; county and state offices of education; and private educational companies. The focus is to prepare graduate students to provide preservice and inservice education in a variety of contexts. These contexts range from undergraduate education, to initial graduate credential programs, to early career induction programs, to career-long professional enhancement. Potential clients for this work include classroom teachers; providers of special services such as counseling, psychological services, and special education; and school administrators. Through research, teaching, and community service, the members of this Specialization seek to improve educational opportunities at local, state, and national levels.

Courses for the Specialization in Teacher Education & Professional Development

Students pursuing this Specialization must already be admitted to an established Emphasis within the Department of Education and must complete all requirements for that Emphasis. In addition, for this Specialization, they must complete the following four courses and one apprenticeship:

ED 279 Perspectives on Teacher Education and Professional Development
ED 282 Research on Teacher Education
ED 283A Practicum in Teacher Education and Professional Development (two quarters)
ED 283B Internship (two quarters; concurrent with ED 283A)
ED 284 Teacher Learning and Knowing
