Julie Bianchini

Associate Professor, Ph.D. (Stanford University)

Biography:
I am an Associate Professor in Science Education at UCSB and Faculty Director of Science and Mathematics Initiative. I received both my undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences and my Ph.D. in Curriculum and Teacher Education from Stanford University. Between degree programs, I served as a biology and physics teacher at an all-girls high school in San Francisco. My expertise rests in issues of equity and diversity in science and science education; the history, philosophy, and sociology of science; and teacher education and professional development. I also have experience in curriculum development and groupwork instruction.

I teach a variety of courses in science education here at UCSB: Learning Theories and Instructional Practices; Issues of Gender and Ethnicity in Science Education; Research on Science Teaching and Science Teacher Education; and the Nature of Science in Science Education. My research investigates ways to make science more accessible, understandable, and interesting to students. My dissertation research, for example, explored how sixth-grade students attending an urban middle school learned science during groupwork, more specifically, what students said and did during activities, who were denied access, and how they performed on unit tests as a result. Later projects included investigating a three-year faculty and curriculum development initiative designed to help scientists transform their teaching of undergraduate science and conducting a four-year study of beginning science teachers’ experiences in both preservice science education courses and secondary science classrooms. My current research examines the views and experiences of practicing secondary science and mathematics teachers engaged in the difficult process of learning about and attempting to address issues of equity and diversity in their classrooms and schools.

An article based on my dissertation research was awarded the 1998 Outstanding Paper in Journal of Research in Science Teaching (JRST) by the National Association for Research in Science Teaching. In 2000, I also received the Early Career Research Award from the National Association for Research in Science Teaching.
