Shane Jimerson from UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School receives two awards
recognizing his leadership in the field of School Psychology

Dr. Shane Jimerson, Professor in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology at the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education at UC Santa Barbara, has recently received two distinguished awards recognizing his outstanding leadership service, which incorporates his scholarship and brings science to practice.

Dr. Jimerson received the 2006 PRESIDENT’S AWARD OF EXCELLENCE from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) for his important leadership and contributions to The Crisis Prevention and Intervention Workgroup in an effort to develop a nation-wide network of school based mental health professionals with school crisis intervention skills and knowledge. The NASP Presidential Award is presented to a select group of individuals who have made significant contributions to the profession, to NASP, and to the specific goals set forth by the president that year. The PREPaRE school crisis prevention and intervention training curriculum has been developed to give school-based mental health professionals guidance on how to best fill the roles and responsibilities generated by their membership on school crisis teams. PREPaRE stands for:

P—Prevent and prepare for psychological trauma;
R—Reaffirm physical health and perceptions of security and safety;
E—Evaluate psychological trauma risk;
P—Provide interventions;
a—and;
R—Respond to psychological needs;
E—Examine the effectiveness of crisis prevention and intervention

Dr. Jimerson received the 2006 PRESIDENT’S AWARD FOR EXEMPLARY CONTRIBUTIONS from the California Association of School Psychologists for his numerous scholarly and professional contributions that have contributed to the well-being of children and the education system across the state, nation, and around the world. The breadth and impact of his scholarship is evident in numerous domains including: promoting school safety and reducing school violence, preparing and responding to crises that impact schools and communities, identifying and addressing children with reading challenges, and implementing intervention services to address the needs of children facing behavioral or academic challenges.

Dr. Jimerson continues to engage in leadership activities at the state, national, and international levels, advocating for children and bringing science to practice to promote the social and cognitive competence of children.
